As Canada Looks to Reduce its Dependency on the US, Carney is Off on a Trade Mission

In his most recent attempt to foster trade relations and wean Canada off of its economic reliance on the United States, Prime Minister Mark Carney is visiting India, Australia, and Japan this week. According to his office, Carney will meet with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday to start the journey in India.

After that, he will go to Australia to meet with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and give the country’s parliament its first speech by a Canadian prime minister in almost two decades. Carney will visit Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi in Tokyo, where the trip will conclude.

In light of trade tensions between the US and Canada, it is the most recent in a series of international trips that Carney has taken in recent months. Since then, Carney has made an effort to patch things up by inviting Modi to the G7 conference in Kananaskis, Alberta, where they met on the sidelines last year.

Anita Anand, the foreign minister of Canada, visited Modi and her counterpart S Jaishankar in India towards the end of last year. Following the summit, the two nations decided to begin trade negotiations. During that visit, she “repeatedly raised issues related to domestic rule of law concerns” and global persecution, Anand told reporters on Monday.
