As the US East Coast Emerges From Historic Snowfall, Almost 5,000 Flights Are Canceled

On Monday, a significant snowstorm with record-breaking snowfall struck the US east coast, disrupting millions of flights and resulting in thousands of cancellations. Nearly 33 inches (83 cm) of snow have fallen in parts of Rhode Island and Massachusetts, with over 19 inches falling in Central Park in New York, according to the National Weather Service.

A state body issued a warning due to “near impossible” traffic conditions in New York. New Jersey and Massachusetts were the hardest-hit states, with over 600,000 households and businesses on the east coast losing electricity. North Carolina to northern Maine was under a winter storm warning, while certain areas of eastern Canada were also under a warning.

According to the National Weather Service, the snow was predicted to continue through Monday, with some locations close to the northeast coast seeing a total of 1 to 2 feet (61 cm) of snow by Tuesday morning. The smallest state in America, Rhode Island, seemed to have gotten the most snowfall during the storm. According to local media, it was indeed the worst snowstorm to ever hit the state.

The state capital of Providence received 33 inches of snow, shattering the previous record of 28.6 inches established in February 1978 for the single largest blizzard. It blew it away,” Boston-based National Weather Service meteorologist Candice Hrencecin told the New York Times.
