Martyn, a Former Australian Batter, Has Meningitis and is in a Coma

The 54-year-old, who participated in 67 Test matches between 1992 and 2006, is allegedly in a Queensland hospital after becoming ill on December 26. Martyn participated in four Ashes series and won two World Cups with Australia. He retired immediately prior to the third Test of the 2006–07 series.

Todd Greenberg, CEO of Cricket Australia, expressed his “saddened to hear of Damien’s illness” and wished Martyn a speedy recovery. He issued the following statement: “The best wishes of everyone at Cricket Australia and in the wider cricket community are with him at this time.

Adam Gilchrist, a close friend and former teammate from Australia, confirmed the right-hander’s hospital treatment on behalf of the Martyn family. Meningitis is an infection of the membranes that envelop the brain and spinal cord.

Speaking on Perth’s 6PR radio station, former Australian Rules football player Brad Hardie stated: “Damien Martyn, the champion from WA [Western Australia], tragically became ill on Boxing Day and is currently dwelling in a Queensland hospital. I want everyone to send Marto their best wishes and encouraging thoughts. It’s quite serious, so let’s hope he can recover.
