Belgium Censures The US Ambassador for Alleged Circumcision

Following a summons from the Belgian government, the U.S. ambassador to Belgium met with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Brussels. The gathering was called after Ambassador Bill White stated that “antisemitism is unacceptable in any form and it must be rooted out of our society” in a post on X on Monday.

The Belgian government responded quickly and angrily, saying Euronews: “This is not the role of a US ambassador.” Everybody is subject to the law under Belgian democracy. Maxime Prévot, the foreign minister, wrote on X that calling Belgium antisemitic is not only incorrect but also harmful misinformation that scuttles the actual battle against racism.

The controversy started because three men were being investigated for circumcising infant boys without the necessary medical certification. According to Belgian legislation, infant males may be circumcised as long as a physician or other medical practitioner performs the procedure. In the past year, Belgium has performed more than 25,000 safe circumcisions, a source with knowledge of the matter told Euronews.

Theodora Gentzis, the ministry’s secretary general, attended Tuesday’s meeting in lieu of Prévot, who called for the ambassador and is now abroad. According to Euronews, White reaffirmed appeals on Belgian authorities to end the probe into the three men during the Tuesday afternoon meeting.
