Israeli President Isaac Herzog has received a pardon request from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Herzog would evaluate the “extraordinary request which carries with it significant implications” after hearing from justice officials, according to the president’s office.
For the past five years, Netanyahu has been on trial for three different instances, including allegations of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. He disputes any misconduct. In a video message, he stated that although national interest “demanded otherwise,” he would have preferred to see the process through to the finish.
US President Donald Trump asked Herzog to “fully pardon the prime minister at the beginning of this month. Herzog clarified at the time that a formal request was required for anyone seeking a pardon. The request and a letter from the prime minister were made public by the president’s office on Sunday, citing “the importance of this extraordinary request and its implications.
Prosecutors in the first instance said that in return for favors, he got presents from influential businesspeople, primarily cigars and bottles of champagne. In a second case, he is charged with offering to help increase the circulation of an Israeli daily in return for favorable publicity.
