UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said Britain will not be pushed into choosing between the United States and China, ahead of his upcoming visit to Beijing, the first by a British leader in eight years.
Speaking to Bloomberg News, Sir Keir said the UK would continue to maintain close ties with the US in areas such as business, security and defence, while also recognising the importance of engaging with China, the world’s second-largest economy.
“I’m often invited to simply choose between countries. I don’t do that,” he said. “We’ve got very close relations with the US, and of course we want to maintain that. But ignoring China would not be sensible.
Sir Keir said the visit could open up significant opportunities for British companies, with dozens of UK business leaders expected to join the trip. The delegation, he added, is focused on trade and investment while remaining firm on national security concerns. They understand the opportunities that are there,” he said. “That does not mean compromising on national security. In fact, it means being clear and confident about it.
