By 2031, Japan Will Place Missiles on an Island Close to Taiwan

As tensions in the region simmer, Japan’s defense minister announced plans to send surface-to-air missiles to its isolated western island close to Taiwan by March 2031. Since its announcement in 2022, Japan has never before given a date for the missile deployment to Yonaguni island.

China has not ruled out using force to “reunify” with Taiwan, which it claims as its own. On a clear day, Yonaguni, which is only 110 kilometers (68 miles) distant, may be seen from Taiwan’s coastline. Since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi seemed to imply in November that Japan might use its self-defense force in the case of an assault on Taiwan, tensions between Beijing and Tokyo have been high.

For a long time, there has been concern that any attack on Taiwan, which the US considers an ally, may lead to a direct military confrontation between Beijing and Washington, which could then spread to other US allies in the area, including Japan.

After Takaichi’s comments to parliament caused relations with China to deteriorate to their lowest point in years, Beijing has been applying more pressure in a variety of ways, including sending warships, restricting shipments of rare earth elements, reducing Chinese travel, calling off concerts, and even taking back its pandas.
