Can Canada Endure The US-Canada Trade War?

Mark Carney, the prime minister of Canada, doesn’t seem eager to start trade negotiations with the United States again. When asked over the weekend when he last spoke with US President Donald Trump, he said, “Who cares? It’s a particular detail. When it matters, I’ll talk to him once more.

In his opinion, there isn’t a “burning issue” to bring up with his US colleague, Carney continued. The prime minister has come under fire for what appears to be a lack of urgency, which begs the question of whether Canada is changing how it approaches trade negotiations with the United States.

Carney is still thinking about going to Washington for the FIFA World Cup draw the following week. Next year, Canada, Mexico, and the United States will host the world competition. Although no official announcement has been made, Canadian media has been informed by sources that Carney and Trump may use the chance to meet.

According to Chris Sands, director of the Center for Canadian Studies at Johns Hopkins University, “this is one of those negotiations where there is a great deal of posturing on both sides. Trump does not want to appear to be in dire need of a deal. They sort of play each other out in an attempt to appear casual since Carney doesn’t want to appear very desperate either.
