At Least Ten People are Killed in a Car Explosion close to Delhi’s Iconic Red Fort

At least ten people were murdered on Monday when a car exploded close to a metro station at the famous Red Fort monument in Delhi, India. Dr. Manish Kumar Jha, a doctor at the nearby Lok Nayak Hospital, stated that around thirty additional individuals were “badly injured” in the explosion. He told reporters, “Many are not in a position to recover.”

The Central Industrial Security Force has placed airports, train stations, government buildings, and historical sites nationwide on high alert, even though the source of the explosion is still unknown. The US embassy in New Delhi advises Americans to avoid crowds and the surrounding area.

The Red Fort, also called the Lal Qila in India, is a 17th-century Mughal-era fort named for its massive red sandstone walls. Millions of tourists visit the UNESCO World Heritage site every year. Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha told reporters that a “slow-moving” car “came to a stop” close to a red light at 6:42 p.m. local time (5:42 a.m. ET) prior to the explosion.

There was an explosion in that car. Both the car’s occupants and those in nearby cars were affected, according to Golcha. According to Reuters, which cited Delhi’s deputy fire chief, at least six cars and three autorickshaws were set on fire.
