Neon and Zane, friends, felt that strong opinions about the company’s millionaire leader may help sway local opinion when they launched a campaign to stop Tesla from constructing a battery recycling facility on a tiny block in their neighbourhood.

However, they were unaware of the extent to which anti-Elon Musk sentiment had extended outside the U.S., where, up until recently, he was the chairman of the Department of Government Efficiency and wreaked havoc in government workplaces.

According to Neon and Zane, the primary goal of their campaign, “Trees Not Teslas,” was to protect about 60 trees on the property. They requested that aliases be used in order to prevent doxxing by Musk fans.

We’re having trouble getting designated green places. Neon, who used to live close to the site and still works nearby, said, “It’s just an insult to try and take away the one bit that’s left within the Tonsley area.”

Hundreds of divisive anti-Musk remarks or outright insults were included in the local council’s results of its community survey on the project, which permits the site to be sold for redevelopment. To provide an idea of the tone, a search turned up 229 references to “Nazi,”Nazism,” or other like terms.
