As part of his tour to the Balkans, European Council President António Costa travelled to Sarajevo on Tuesday after visiting Belgrade. Before meeting with the Bosnian president, he was welcomed as he arrived.
The head of the European Council said in a statement that the EU “remains committed” to the nation’s European destiny. He also commended members of the Western Balkan nation’s three-way presidency, Željka Cvijanović, Denis Bećirović, and Željko Komšić, for their contributions to regional and national stability and security.
Domestic tensions have recently been building due to the acts of Milorad Dodik, the leader of the Republika Srpska (RS), which state-level officials have condemned for compromising the nation’s constitutional order. Costa emphasised the significance of the Dayton Accords, which will celebrate their 30th anniversary this year, in his comments.
And I think it’s a crucial message to remember this year, on the 30th anniversary of the genocide at Srebrenica and the Dayton (and) Paris Agreement,” Costa added. Costa said that in order to guarantee Bosnia’s continued progress towards EU membership, some changes are required.
