In an order on Thursday, Judge Rita Lin sided with the artificial intelligence (AI) startup, ruling that President Donald Trump and US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth’s orders for all government departments to immediately cease utilizing Anthropic technologies could not be enforced for the time being.
The government was trying to “cripple Anthropic” and “chill public debate” due to the company’s concerns over the US Department of Defense’s use of its technology, according to Judge Lin’s order.The judge said, “This seems to be classic First Amendment retaliation.”
Until the litigation is settled, Anthropic’s instruments, such as Claude, will be utilized by the government and any outside business collaborating with the armed forces. Requests for a response from the Department of Defence and the White House went unanswered.
A representative for Anthropic stated that while the firm was “pleased” with the California federal court’s decision, its main goal “remains on working productively with the government to ensure all Americans benefit from safe, reliable AI.”
Earlier this month, Anthropic filed a lawsuit against the Department of Defence and several other agencies following Trump’s public criticism of the company and Hegseth’s designation of it as a supply chain risk,” the first time a US company has ever been officially labelled as such.
