According to the national union of media workers, the Portuguese media business Medialivre, of which football player Cristiano Ronaldo is the largest stakeholder, is planning to lay off many of its journalists.
According to Vitor Mota, a union spokesperson and photojournalist at Medialivre, 10 employees have been notified they will lose their jobs thus far, Euronews said. The ten people were sent a warning letter on Wednesday afternoon, the day before Labour Day in several European nations, according to Mota, who is about to lose his job.
Mota pointed out that two permanent writers in the Porto division and eight permanent photojournalists at Medialivre’s Lisbon headquarters are currently impacted by the announced reduction. Mota pointed out that it is still too early to determine with confidence whether the job losses are more widespread, but a statement from the Portuguese Journalists’ Union raises the possibility.
The union will challenge the ten job losses that have already been publicised, he said. Until the legal details of the layoffs are resolved, the impacted journalists will need to continue working.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Journalists’ Union said, “The Journalists’ Union has learnt, with surprise and shock, of Medialivre’s intention to carry out a mass layoff, focussing on photojournalists, which will reduce the number of employees in publications such as Correio da Manhã, Record, Jornal de Negócios, and the magazine Sábado.
