Despite Beijing’s Protests, Taiwan Boasts the Best Tariff Deal With the US

Taiwan’s prime minister on Friday welcomed a new trade agreement with the United States, calling it the most favourable tariff arrangement secured by any economy that runs a trade surplus with Washington. The deal, however, drew sharp criticism from Beijing.

Under the agreement, US tariffs on Taiwanese goods will be set at 15 percent in return for Taiwan committing $250 billion (€215.3 billion) in new investments in the US technology sector. The terms are similar to recent trade arrangements the United States has reached with the European Union and Japan, following President Donald Trump’s push for higher tariffs on major trading partners.

Taiwanese Premier Cho Jung-tai said the island had successfully negotiated a 15 percent tariff rate without additional fees. He noted that the original tariff proposed by Washington was 32 percent, later reduced to 20 percent before the final agreement was reached.

China, which considers self-governed Taiwan part of its territory, strongly criticised the deal. Speaking at a regular press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Guo Jiakun said Beijing firmly opposes any agreements between other countries and Taiwan that carry official or sovereign implications.
