Despite Trump’s Tariffs, China Reports a Record $1 Trillion Trade Surplus

China has reported its strongest export performance on record for 2025, despite global trade disruption caused by tariffs and policy shifts under US President Donald Trump. Data released by Beijing on Wednesday showed China recorded a trade surplus of $1.19 trillion (£890 billion), the highest ever for any country in a single year. This is the first time China’s annual trade surplus has crossed the $1 trillion mark, surpassing the previous record of $993 billion set in 2024.

The figures highlight how China’s exports remained resilient throughout the year. Monthly trade surpluses exceeded $100 billion on seven occasions, suggesting that US tariff measures had limited impact on China’s overall trade performance. While exports to the United States declined, this was largely offset by stronger trade with other regions, particularly Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America.

Speaking at a press conference, Wang Jun, deputy director of China’s customs authority, described the results as extraordinary and hard-won, pointing to major shifts and ongoing challenges in the global trading environment. He also noted growing exports in sectors such as green technology, artificial intelligence-related products and robotics.
