Debunking Moscow’s Claims That the EU is Planning a Regime Change in Hungary

The European Commission is “studying scenarios” for “regime change” in Hungary, according to accusations made by Russia’s intelligence agency, the SVR. Both Russian state-sponsored media and misinformation operators on social media have extensively promoted the allegations, which lack any supporting proof. EuroVerify identified the baseless rumors that were becoming viral on Facebook, Instagram, Telegram, and X.

Significant material, administrative, media, and lobbying resources have been mobilized” in favor of Peter Magyar, a former Viktor Orbán insider whose center-right TISZA party is now leading the polls, according to a statement released by the SVR July 13.

The SVR statement has alarmed independent Hungarian journalists who work to report independently despite Viktor Orbán’s government’s democratic backsliding, claiming that Russia is “meddling in Hungarian politics.”

Hungary’s state news agency has quoted the misinformation. It implies that Russian meddling in Hungarian affairs may intensify in the lead-up to the April 2026 parliamentary elections. Orbán, who is regarded as a Kremlin-friendly voice in the EU, has continuously used Hungary’s veto authority over foreign policy decisions to obstruct EU assistance for Ukraine.
