According to Downing Street, the UK is still in “active conversations with US counterparts at all levels of government” regarding a comprehensive technology agreement. The BBC understands that US concerns about broader trade restrictions in the UK have caused negotiations on the Technology Prosperity Deal to stall.
The cooperation, which was hailed as “historic” when it was announced during US President Donald Trump’s state visit in September, saw both nations commit to expanding their collaboration in fields like artificial intelligence and quantum computing. We’re convinced of securing an accord that will shape the future of millions on both sides of the Atlantic,” the official spokesperson for the prime minister stated.
He said that “negotiations of this kind are never straightforward” but declined to comment directly on what were “live” talks. The New York Times, which broke the story first, claimed that there were “broader disagreements” between the two parties, including those pertaining to food safety regulations and internet restrictions. Regarding these particular allegations, the UK government remained silent. When the BBC asked the White House for comment, they did not reply.
