After The Drug Lord’s Death, Mexico Deploys Thousands of Troops to Quell the Bloodshed

According to the country’s security minister, Mexico has sent thousands of troops to increase security after a wave of violence broke out after the death of a prominent drug lord. About 9,500 troops have been sent since Sunday, according to the government, while an additional 2,500 troops were sent to western Mexico on Monday, according to Defense Secretary Ricardo Trevilla.

Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, popularly known as “El Mencho,” was caught by Mexican special forces in Jalisco state and killed in jail on Sunday, sparking uproar in at least 20 states. The boss of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), one of Mexico’s most dreaded criminal organizations, was the most sought person in the nation. According to Mexico’s security minister, at least 25 National Guard troops have lost their lives in Jalisco state since the violence started.

According to Defense Secretary Trevilla, El Mencho was apprehended after authorities located a romantic partner he was meeting. The drug kingpin died while being transported by the military from the hamlet of Tapalpa to the capital, Mexico City, after being gravely wounded in a battle between his bodyguards and the commandos sent in to apprehend him.
