As politicians share blame for the first government shutdown in nearly seven years, the White House says mass layoffs of US federal employees will start in two days. After Republicans and Democrats in Congress were unable to reach a consensus on a new spending plan before the midnight deadline, the shutdown started on Wednesday.
Hours after the shutdown started, a vote to end it failed, and there is little indication that either side is prepared to make concessions. Since then, the Senate has adjourned, escalating concerns that the shutdown may continue, endanger hundreds of thousands of jobs, and cost the US economy billions in lost productivity.
Alongside Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Vice-President JD Vance made a rare appearance at a White House briefing on Wednesday afternoon, accusing the Democrats of manipulating the shutdown for political ends.
They should reopen the government instead of complaining about our response if they are so concerned about the impact this is having on the American people, as they rightfully should be,” he said.
In the meantime, Leavitt declared that widespread layoffs will occur in two days. “Sometimes you have to do things that you don’t want to do,” she stated, before noting that “Democrats put us in this position .
