Rep. Eric Swalwell, a Democrat from California, was sent to the Justice Department by a Trump administration official on claims of mortgage fraud, a source close to the situation told CNN. Bill Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, made the claim. Pulte has previously made similar accusations against prominent Democratic figures, such as California Senator Adam Schiff and New York Attorney General Letitia James.
According to reports, Pulte alleged in a letter to Attorney General Pam Bondi that Swalwell may have provided false or misleading information on loan documents for his $1.2 million Washington, D.C. property. There remains some confusion as to whether the Justice Department has officially received and is acting on this referral one official said Pulte delivered it orally and mailed a written copy. Still, the receipt had not yet been confirmed as of Thursday.
Previous referrals from Pulte have resulted in real action: Letitia James was indicted last month for bank fraud, and Adam Schiff is under federal investigation. In response, Rep. Swalwell, who has long been a vocal critic of Donald Trump including acting as an impeachment manager during Trump’s second impeachment, said in a statement that he was “not surprised” Trump’s allies were targeting him, particularly as the only person still pursuing a lawsuit against Trump related to the events of January 6, 2021.
