The focus of the Munich Security Summit was US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as European leaders anxiously anticipated the tone of his speech on Saturday. His address has been seen as a reassurance to allies that although US relations may have deteriorated under Donald Trump, they will not shatter, even though it did not entirely alleviate their worries.
However, Rubio wasn’t the only American politician speaking at the security meeting. Additionally, other American politicians were imitating the Persian poet by advising that “this too shall pass” even if the secretary of state’s remarks had not been as well received and he had harshly criticised Europeans like Vice-President JD Vance did at the conference last year.”Donald Trump is temporary,” California Governor Gavin Newsom stated at a conference event on Friday, if he had anything else to say. Three years from now, he will be gone.
Several Democrats, including the Californian, who might run for their party’s 2028 presidential nomination, were among the dozens of American lawmakers and governors there, including Newsom. Many highlighted that the United States would remain a strong partner with Europe; these were similar to Rubio’s remarks, but they were tainted by his critique of the continent’s cultural degradation.
