Authorities say they are looking into a suspected training mishap following Friday’s explosion at a law enforcement training center in Los Angeles that claimed three lives. According to Nicole Nishida, a spokesman for the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the explosion was reported at the Biscailuz Training Facility at about 7:30 am.
What caused the explosion and what the department members were doing at the time were not immediately known. A law enforcement official briefed on the matter, who was not authorized to discuss the matter by name, told the AP on condition of anonymity that an early line of investigation was looking at a possible training accident.
According to a post on X by Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, the training center was receiving assistance from arson investigators from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, the Los Angeles Fire Department, and members of the Los Angeles Police Department bomb squad.
According to California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office, he has received a briefing and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services is keeping a close eye on the situation while communicating with the Sheriff’s Department.
