According to a US court, the former CEO of the fashion company Abercrombie & Fitch is “mentally incompetent” and not yet able to stand trial on sex trafficking and prostitution charges. In order to ascertain if Mike Jeffries’ condition would likely improve enough for the case to move forward, he will now be detained and receive medical treatment in a hospital for a maximum of four months. According to Mr. Jeffries’ legal team, he was diagnosed with dementia and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease in December of last year.

He faces a life sentence in prison for allegedly trafficking and sexually abusing vulnerable men for years while abusing his riches, influence, and rank. The defendant was “suffering from a mental disease or defect” and was thus “unable to understand” the court proceedings, according to Judge Nusrat Choudhury’s Friday ruling.

The decision was made following an evaluation by two medical specialists, one selected by Mr. Jeffries’ defence team and the other by the prosecution. In a court order, Judge Choudhury stated that Mr. Jeffries would receive inpatient treatment for a maximum of four months to determine his likelihood of regaining his competency. The defendant may be tried after a follow-up evaluation is completed, or the court may decide to consider other options.
