Heineken UK has announced plans to lower the alcohol content of its popular Foster’s Lager in response to changing consumer preferences. From February next year, the lager’s Alcohol By Volume (ABV) will drop from 3.7% to 3.4%, marking its second reduction in two years after being lowered from 4% in 2023.
The company said the change reflects a growing trend among drinkers who are choosing lower-alcohol options as part of healthier lifestyles. Rising inflation and adjustments to alcohol duty introduced this year also influenced the decision.
A Heineken UK spokesperson said the move “supports responsible drinking while ensuring pubs and retailers can offer a competitively priced lager.” They added that the company’s master brewers had spent months perfecting the updated recipe to keep the drink’s signature crisp and balanced flavour.
Heineken assured customers that the lower ABV will not affect the taste, saying the revised brew has undergone “extensive consumer testing” to ensure it maintains the same quality and drinking experience that fans of Foster’s expect.
