France will Increase its Nuclear Arsenal and Provide its Partners in Europe with Deterrence

In a significant shift in its nuclear defense strategy, France plans to increase its nuclear arsenal and spread the deterrent to other European nations. President Emmanuel Macron described the measures as a reaction to a strategic environment that is becoming more unstable in a speech in Brittany.”Nuclear weapons will be prevalent in the next fifty years,” he declared.

He told navy officers in front of a nuclear submarine at the Ile Longue base, which is close to the port of Brest, that there will be more French nuclear weapons than the existing 300. He declared that The Invincible, a new nuclear-armed submarine, would be launched in 2036.

According to him, a new “advanced deterrence” plan has been agreed to by eight additional European nations: the UK, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden, and Denmark. Referencing the decision, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk wrote on X: “We are arming up together with our friends so that our enemies will never dare to attack us.”

Macron stated that the eight European nations might host air bases where France’s nuclear bombers could be positioned and participate in exercises of France’s force de frappe, or air-launched nuclear capability.
