Greenland “will never, ever be a piece of property that just anyone can buy,” said Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the new prime minister of Greenland, on Sunday, calling US remarks about the mineral-rich Arctic island insulting.
His remarks followed a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen on Sunday, the second day of a three-day official visit, at her official house. Nielsen made these comments in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated calls for the state to seize control of the Arctic island, rich in minerals.
“The language used has not been respectful,” he added. That is the reason we must unite in this circumstance.
In response to Trump’s aspirations for the region, Greenlandic political parties, which have long advocated for the region’s complete independence from Denmark, have recently formed a broad coalition government. Nielsen’s three-day visit, which began on Saturday, aimed to promote future collaboration between the two countries, according to the Greenlandic administration.
Denmark is willing to make investments in Greenlandic society, and this isn’t merely a legacy. Additionally, we share it as members of the Danish commonwealth,” Frederiksen stated. She said, “Of course, we have a will to continue investing in Greenlandic society. Before heading back to Greenland with Frederiksen for a royal visit to the island, Nielsen is expected to see King Frederik X on Monday.
