Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has hailed a rabbi and security personnel from a synagogue in Manchester as “heroes” for their response to the attack on the property. The attack occurred during Yom Kippur worship at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation synagogue in the city’s north, killing two Jewish people and seriously injuring four others.
Sir Stephen Watson, the Chief Constable for Greater Manchester Police (GMP), acknowledged that security personnel and worshipers prevented the assailant from entering before he was shot and killed by police. Sir Keir stated that the synagogue’s security personnel and emergency services “prevented an even greater tragedy” without a doubt.
Before stabbing many people, the assailant drove a car at crowds while wearing a suspected bomb device, which GMP has stated was not feasible.
According to a witness at the scene, prayers had begun when the attack occurred, but Rabbi Daniel Walker, who was conducting the service, stayed composed and guided the congregation to safety with the help of others.
According to Sir Stephen, the synagogue was packed with congregants when the tragedy occurred. Thanks to the “immediate bravery of security staff and the worshippers inside,” he commended the worshippers and security personnel who repelled the intruder.
