At the close of a special EU summit on Thursday, where Viktor Orbán blocked the acceptance of unified conclusions in favor of Ukraine, forcing leaders to proceed with an attached “extract” signed by 26 countries, António Costa remarked, “Hungary is isolated. Orbán has criticized the final text’s references to “peace through strength,” military support, and security assurances for Kyiv.
The Hungarian prime minister made it clear before the summit that he would veto the proposed text, claiming it conflicted with US President Donald Trump’s initiative to make a deal, which Orbán has steadfastly supported.
Leaders in the room decided that rather than a drastically weakened version that Budapest would accept, Ukraine should move on with a more ambitious statement, even though just 26 people signed it, because Orbán was unwilling to compromise.
After the crucial meeting in Brussels, European Council President António Costa stated that Hungary has a different geopolitical stance regarding Ukraine. Hungary is therefore alone out of the 27. Hungary’s stance is respected, but it’s only one out of twenty-seven. Additionally, 26 is more than one.
