Hurricane Melissa: Jamaica Prepares for 2025’s Most Powerful Hurricane

As Jamaica prepares for the worst hurricane on record for the island and possibly the world this year, three people have already lost their lives. US meteorologists have warned of “catastrophic and life-threatening” conditions.

Hurricane Melissa has reached the maximum power of a category five hurricane, with wind gusts of up to 175 mph (282 km/h). It is predicted to hit the Caribbean island early on Tuesday and is getting stronger.

In addition to the fatalities in Jamaica, it has also been held accountable for four deaths in Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Melissa’s slow speed, according to experts, might result in extended periods of intense rain in some places, raising the possibility of fatal flooding and landslides. Prior to the hurricane’s arrival, Jamaica’s ministry of health and wellness said on X that three “storm-related deaths” had already been confirmed in the country Monday evening.

The NHC warned that “catastrophic and life-threatening winds, flooding, and storm surge” were anticipated in Jamaica “tonight and early Tuesday” in its most recent public advisory update, which was released at 18:00 GMT on Monday.
