A memorial service was held on Memorial Day at Arlington, Virginia, to honour deceased US servicemen and remember their sacrifice. US President Donald Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth attended the event. Arlington National Cemetery, where over 400,000 people—many of them soldiers—have been buried, hosted the service.
In keeping with the solemn custom of US presidents, Trump laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. After putting the wreath, the president paused, took a step back, and then Vance and Hegseth joined him in saluting.
We simply honour their amazing legacy,” Trump remarked. In their immortal and everlasting glory, we honour them. And while we build our country stronger, prouder, freer, and larger than ever, we keep pursuing America’s destiny with unwavering determination. He claimed that we now have the most liberated, magnificent, and honourable republic in history because of their bravery. After four difficult years, I am restoring a republic.
He described how Navy Senior Chief Petty Officer Shannon Kent was killed in Syria in 2019 by a suicide bomber along with three other Americans, leaving behind her husband, their three-year-old son, and their eighteen-month-old baby.
