In their first discussion prior to the federal election vote on May 3, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his opponent, Peter Dutton, squared off. The debate, which was organized by Sky News Australia and The Daily Telegraph, focused on the cost of living. The two leaders were also questioned about US President Donald Trump’s tariffs.
According to surveys, Dutton’s Liberal-National coalition and Albanese’s Labor Party are expected to win by a narrow margin. Either party may have to build the next government with independent MPs or minor parties.
After a vote of 100 indecisive voters, who also supplied the questions for the evening, Sky News proclaimed Albanese the winner
According to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the majority of the audience raised their hands when the debate host asked if they were struggling with the expense of living.
Dutton called the demonstration a “very confronting scene” and promised instant relief with his proposal to temporarily reduce a fuel tax imposed by the government.
Albanese blamed the difficult global economic climate on “the world having thrown a lot of challenges at Australia.” However, he claimed to have increased wages and decreased inflation, and he also indicated that interest rates were beginning to decline.
