In Davos, Trump is Expected to Confront a Diplomatic Intervention Regarding Greenland

President Donald Trump is facing urgent diplomatic pressure in Davos after several days of escalating threats toward US allies over Greenland. Senior European leaders are using this week’s World Economic Forum as a critical moment to prevent a rapidly growing crisis that has unsettled the continent and raised concerns about the future of the long-standing transatlantic alliance, according to people familiar with the discussions.

The effort comes as unease is also emerging within Trump’s own circle. Some advisers have privately questioned the president’s rhetoric and are quietly looking for ways to ease tensions. In the short term, European officials are focused on calming the situation after Trump warned he would impose new tariffs on allies who resist his demand for what he described as “complete and total control” of Greenland. Beyond that, the broader goal is to steer the president away from pursuing ownership of the Danish territory altogether.

Several possible compromises are being explored by Trump advisers and Western diplomats. One option is to expand existing agreements that already allow the United States to operate military bases and deploy resources on the island. Another includes new commercial and economic partnerships. Any deal could feature a formal signing ceremony, giving Trump a visible outcome he could present as a diplomatic success, people familiar with the talks said.
