For the fourth consecutive night, there was chaos in Northern Ireland, but it was not as bad as it had been earlier in the week. On Thursday, a mob in Portadown, County Armagh, flung bricks and other debris at police after removing them from a structure that had been abandoned.
Forty-one cops were hurt in the first three days of the violence, which started in Ballymena. So far, 15 persons have been taken into custody. Following a nonviolent demonstration against an alleged sexual assault in the County Antrim town on Monday, the chaos began.
Officers in riot gear blocked many roadways, and around 20 police cars were stationed along the main thoroughfare. An empty beer keg and other objects were hurled at police during a peaceful demonstration that had previously broken out in the town.
Officers had to put out several flames while a police aircraft hovered above the town centre. Jonathan Buckley, an MLA for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), urged “calm”.No matter where they are from, nobody wants to see violence on our streets in Northern Ireland,” he stated. Over the last few days, there have been some unsettling scenes.
