In his evidence on Tuesday, Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta, defended his company’s acquisitions of WhatsApp and the photo-sharing app Instagram. He was on the witness stand for a second day in a historic Federal Trade Commission monopoly lawsuit in Washington.
FTC attorneys questioned Mr. Zuckerberg about whether Meta might have created its app to rival Instagram rather than purchasing the rival. I’m sure we could have built an app,” as he said. “I believe it is up for debate whether it would have succeeded.
When asked about a 2012 email he wrote to < Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook’s then-chief Operating Officer, Mr. Zuckerberg stated, “Building a new app is hard.” Instagram is growing so much faster than us that we had to buy them for $1 billion,” Mr. Zuckerberg wrote to Sandberg in the email that the FTC disclosed.
Additionally, the email included Facebook Messenger, which Mr. Zuckerberg claimed wasn’t “beating WhatsApp.” Two years later, the corporation purchased Whatsapp. Most of the time, when we’ve attempted to develop a new app, it hasn’t gained much traction,” Mr. Zuckerberg stated in the Washington, DC courtroom on Tuesday.
