According to four congressional officials who attended the briefing and a lawmaker who was briefed on it later, tensions erupted behind closed doors today as defense and intelligence officials briefed some lawmakers about the war in Iran. Republicans and Democrats expressed frustration about a lack of clarity and information about Trump’s strategy.
The possibility of the United States sending ground troops into Iran, including what the troops could be used for and whether the U.S. can adequately protect them once they are deployed, was a major source of frustration during the briefing for the House Armed Services Committee, according to officials and lawmakers.
They didn’t provide any solutions, and they didn’t reveal any strategy, plan, or endgame. One of the congressional officials stated, “It’s unclear if there is a plan or if there is and they wouldn’t share it with members.”
The briefing was held as the war approached its one-month mark, and the Trump administration is sending more troops to the Middle East and attempting to put a stop to it diplomatically while Trump considers whether to station American personnel inside Iran.
Following the briefing, Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., the committee chairman, admitted in a text message to NBC News that there has been some dissatisfaction with “ALL the briefings that we have been receiving for the last several months.
