Amid reports of increased protests in Iran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stated that his country will not succumb to foreign pressure while nuclear discussions with the United States are ongoing.
During a live broadcast on state television, Pezeshkian stated, “World powers are lining up to force us to bow our heads… but we will not bow our heads despite all of the problems that they are causing us.”
Meanwhile, local and diaspora media reported continued anti-government student protests in Tehran over the thousands of people slain in the January confrontations, as well as other groups expressing support for the government.
AFP-recorded footage from Tehran’s top engineering institution shows people yelling “bi sharaf,” or “disgraceful,” as fights break out. Iran International, a Persian-language television channel based in London, also covered protests at Sharif University of Technology, which is also located in the capital.
According to Fars, a planned “silent and peaceful sit-in” to honour the dead was disrupted when some students began chanting slogans such as “death to the dictator,” a reference to Iran’s supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
