Iran’s Succession: Mojtaba Khamenei is Connected to a Network of Upscale European Real Estate

The succession to lead the Islamic Republic is still up in the air after the passing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. As of now, there is no official name for a new Supreme Leader. Although no official declaration has been made, Mojtaba Khamenei, the 56-year-old son of the deceased Supreme Leader, has emerged as the front-runner to succeed his father behind the scenes.

Khamenei has developed close relations to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and has been a highly important member of the Supreme Leader’s inner circle for decades, despite never having ran for office or being put to the public vote.

A father-to-son succession would be politically delicate in the Islamic Republic, according to critics. According to an Iranian source close to his office who spoke to Reuters in 2024, Khamenei himself had opposed his son’s candidacy because he did not want to see a return to hereditary rule, which many Iranians see as undermining the 1979 revolution that overthrew Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s US-backed monarchy.

According to reports, Mojtaba Khamenei also has a sizable network of properties abroad. According to a year-long Bloomberg investigation, he oversees a sizable international real estate network via middlemen; no assets are directly registered in his name.
