It Was Horrifying: Locals Recount the Devastation After the Thai Train Accident

Residents of Ban Thanon Khot in Thailand are used to the steady sound of passing trains. Rail travel is a vital link for the remote town, connecting it to larger cities and supporting daily life. On Wednesday, that familiar routine turned into a devastating disaster.

The sound was much louder than usual. It was a massive crash,” said school volunteer Pitchaya Promenade. “I saw a blue crane sliding. It looked stuck for a second, and then it suddenly tipped over. The construction crane collapsed onto a moving train, killing at least 32 people and injuring 66 others. Most of the victims were students and workers travelling to school and their jobs.

By evening, the scene remained harrowing. Rescuers were still pulling bodies from the wreckage, with several train carriages badly crushed. “Visually, it looked like a spoon scooping into a slice of cake, said Pitchaya, 32, who has basic first-aid training and helped some of the injured.

There was an elderly woman hanging upside down from one carriage. Another woman, whose arm appeared broken, was holding on to her, she added. One carriage caught fire after the impact, making rescue efforts even more difficult. Emergency teams used cranes and hydraulic cutting equipment to reach passengers trapped inside.
