Before the altercation in the Oval Office, Volodymyr Zelensky and Donald Trump had a strained relationship. He was already referred to as a dictator by President Trump, who also falsely claimed that Ukraine initiated the conflict. The US-Ukraine friendship that Joe Biden fostered is now in ruins.
The public collapse also portends a serious problem between the US and European NATO allies. Outside of Ukraine, there will be a lot more uncertainties and concerns regarding US commitment to European security. The most significant is whether President Trump would honor the 1949 pledge made by his predecessor, Harry Truman, to consider an assault on a NATO ally as an attack on the United States.
These worries stem from Trump’s apparent resolve to mend the strained ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin. He has offered Putin significant concessions that the Ukrainians would have to make while applying intense pressure on Ukraine. Ukraine’s security is lagging behind, and Europeans are concerned about their own security as well. Trump is enraged by President Zelensky’s refusal to make those compromises.
