Joblessness in the Eurozone Unexpectedly Drops to a Record Low

According to Eurostat, unemployment in the 21-member eurozone decreased to 6.1% in January from 6.2% in December 2025 and 6.3% the previous year. Economists predicted the rate would stay at 6.2%. The number corresponds to 10.77 million unemployed individuals within the bloc.

Even while the unemployment rate remained at 6.2%, the 20 original countries of the eurozone, with the exception of Bulgaria, the newest member of the currency union, also recorded improvements.

However, the overall unemployment rate is dropping, indicating a more robust labor market. In the broader European Union, unemployment decreased to 5.8% from 6% in January 2025 and 5.9% in December.

The unemployment rate decreased by 185,000 in the EU and 184,000 in the eurozone month over month.
With unemployment rates of 4% apiece, Germany and the Netherlands had the lowest rates among the bloc’s biggest countries.

France (7.7%), Italy (5.1%), and Spain (9.8%) remained at the upper end of the range.With the EU rate dropping to 15.1% from 15.2% and the eurozone rate falling to 14.8% from 15%, youth unemployment also somewhat decreased.
