What President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev stated in his late-night speech was verified by the Central Electoral Commission. Preliminary findings indicate that on March 15, the day of the referendum, the people approved the Constitution.
We saw something very historic for our nation today. Kazakhstani voters supported the constitutional amendment and took part in the referendum. They cast their ballots for our nation’s future. We can declare with confidence that Kazakhstan has made its historic decision in favor of the new Constitution based on the results of the exit poll. Thus, our people decided Kazakhstan’s future and the path of history through their vote,” Tokayev said.
The President, who started the change in the days leading up to the election, claimed that while the current constitution was crucial during the challenging years of Kazakhstan’s independence following the fall of the Soviet Union, the times had changed since then and the nation required a new foundational document.
The new constitution strengthens the president’s role. The chairs of the Constitutional Court, the Supreme Judicial Council, the National Bank, the National Security Committee, and the Prosecutor General can currently be appointed by the president with Senate confirmation.
