Career Trajectory of Christoph Klein
As a financial analyst, Christoph selected and recommended corporate and convertible bonds and constructed quantitative credit rating models. That worked well, and in 2000, he became a portfolio manager, also participating in significant global client meetings and pitches. In 2004, he was invited to become a credit hedge fund manager in London, where he built and managed a fantastic team of analysts, portfolio managers, risk managers, and traders.
Despite the success, Christoph decided to return to his previous employer in Frankfurt, gaining more responsibilities and becoming Managing Director. Since 2005, he has recognized the growing importance of sustainability and climate risk and has incorporated this into the institution’s global credit research and investment process. As Christoph enjoys networking, he has been an active member of relevant institutions such as CFA, DVFA, FNG, and PRI.
Spark Behind the Journey
Speaking of the moments that sparked the idea for his company, Christoph shares, “In 2015, I was invited to speak at the Global CFA Conference about Integrating ESG into the Fixed-Income Portfolio. This was well-received and subsequently published by the CFA Institute. This gave me the confidence to start my own company. My goal was to design and manage a truly sustainable investment fund.
This included setting strict exclusion criteria, selecting companies with strong ESG performance and relatively low GHG emissions, measuring and increasing SDG impact, and actively engaging and using proxy voting.

For this exceptional performance, the company won several awards, including the German Sustainability Award 2025. In 2024 and 2021, ESG Portfolio Management won the ESG Investing Awards in the Multi-Asset and Fixed Income categories. In 2023 and 2020, Christoph won the Sustainable Investment Award, Multi-asset manager of the year. Moreover, in 2020, the organisation, Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI), included ESG Portfolio Management in its Leaders’ Group.
However, due to the inability to attract more clients and investors to the company, Christoph dedicated his expertise to working on adjusting the company’s strategy.

Words of Wisdom for Aspiring Professionals
Addressing the beginners in this field, Christoph shares three pieces of advice he wished he had when starting in his career path, “When you start your own investment fund, make sure you have sufficient seed capital. Famous family and friends. Hoping that awards would trigger inflows did not work out in my case.
