Born and raised in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, Steven Looije had a very down-to-earth mindset while growing up, and still carries it with him. Shifting to Dubai in 2015, he got involved in his family recruitment business, but soon realized his spark for real estate.
“Dubai was booming. Massive new projects were being launched left and right, and the ambition of the city was contagious. I started diving into the market, learning how things worked, and talking to people in the industry. It didn’t take long before I knew: this is what I wanted to do. I stepped out of the family business and started working as a real estate agent,” he mentions. Last year, Steven took a big leap in his career and started his company, HUIS Real Estate, which he calls the best decision he ever made.

For someone just starting out in the field of real estate, Steven suggests first learning to be patient. Real estate in Dubai can look flashy from the outside, but it’s hard work. Gaining an in-depth knowledge of the field, including contracts, laws, payment plans, neighborhoods, developer reputations, and more, is crucial to sustaining in this industry.
“Don’t focus on making quick money; rather, focus on building real relationships. Listen more than you speak and don’t fake knowledge but ask questions. If you don’t know something, say it and go find the answer. People respect honesty more than a perfect sales pitch. Additionally, treat every deal as if it were your own investment, rather than pushing it to a client. And lastly, build your own brand. Avoid copying other agents, figure out what makes you different and lean into it. In a market like Dubai, personality and trust go a long way,” Steven suggests.
