While the Italian prime minister was in Washington, Donald Trump and Giorgia Meloni discussed the potential for a trade agreement between the United States and Europe. Trump declared, “There will be a trade deal, 100%,” but Meloni stated that she was “sure” that they could agree, later adding that her goal was to “make the West great again.
Since Trump implemented and then halted 20% tariffs on imports from the group, Meloni is the first European leader to travel to Washington. Separately, the US president stated on Thursday that he is confident of striking “a terrific deal” with China, noting that Beijing officials had contacted him “some times.
Despite strained ties and growing concerns about the global impact of Trump’s tariffs, Meloni, the Italian leader, seeks to establish herself as a mediator between the US and the EU. Trump and Meloni have a positive connection. Trump claimed he was in “no rush,” even though he was certain a deal would be reached eventually.
“Everyone wants to reach an agreement. He said that he anticipates signing agreements with each nation “over the next three to four weeks” and that if they choose not to, we will negotiate on their behalf. Trump also implied that he was hesitant to increase the 145% tariffs currently in place on China.
