Former Russian Transport Minister Roman Starovoit was discovered dead, reportedly from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Russia’s Investigative Committee. Earlier Monday, President Vladimir Putin fired him. Starovoit was fired without explanation, and Andrei Nikitin, the deputy minister of transport, was soon named as his successor.
The Investigative Committee stated that it was investigating the incident’s circumstances. Before then, until May 2024, Starovoit had been the governor of the Kursk region for over six years.
In August 2024, Ukrainian soldiers launched a surprise attack and took part of the territory. Although Kyiv claimed in late June that it still controlled a tiny portion of territory inside Russia, Moscow just recently succeeded in driving out the Ukrainian soldiers.
Aleksey Smirnov, Starovoit’s successor, held office for a brief period of time. After his arrest in April, he was charged with embezzling money intended for the construction of fortifications along the Ukrainian border.
Kommersant, a Russian news agency, said that Starovoit was set to be added as a defendant in the same lawsuit. The precise date of Starovoit’s death is unknown. Andrei Kartapolov, the head of the State Duma Defence Committee, informed Russian news agency RTVI that he passed away “quite a while ago.
