In the Bay Area of California, where Meta is based, Mark Zuckerberg and his wife, Priscilla Chan, established a tuition-free school for low-income families in 2016. The Primary School was established under the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI), the couple’s charitable endeavour, to integrate healthcare and education for kids “from birth through high school.” The organization’s educational initiatives, according to Chan, a former paediatrician, combine her two main hobbies.
However, the Primary School unexpectedly revealed this week that it would close after the 2025–2026 academic year. The school told the hundreds of families it serves across two campuses that the closing was a “very difficult decision,” but it provided few details.
According to the New York Times and the San Francisco Standard, parents were informed that the school was closing because CZI was no longer providing support. In response to a follow-up query on the organization’s financing of the school, a Chan Zuckerberg Initiative spokesman informed CNN that the decision was taken by the school’s board of directors and cited their statement. According to the school’s message this week, CZI intends to provide $50 million to the families and communities impacted by the shutdown.
