According to medical professionals, Pope Francis will require at least two months of recuperation in the Vatican after being released from Rome’s Gemelli hospital on Sunday. On February 14, the 88-year-old was brought to the hospital due to a serious respiratory infection that led to double pneumonia.
According to Dr. Sergio Alfieri, one of the physicians caring for the Pope, Francis had “two very critical episodes” over the previous five weeks during which his “life was in danger.” According to Dr. Alfieri, Pope Francis was never intubated and always stayed conscious and focused. The Pope’s doctors say he is in a stable state and no longer has pneumonia, but he is not fully recovered.
We are pleased to report that he will return home tomorrow, Dr. Alfieri told reporters on Saturday. The Pope will make his first public appearance since his hospital admission on Sunday. He will give a blessing from his window at the Gemelli hospital before leaving for his Vatican home. According to his medical staff, people who have double pneumonia tend to lose their voice slightly, and it could take some time for it to recover.
