Shortly after the United States placed tariffs on Canada, a neighbourhood tavern in Toronto started to eliminate all American goods from its menu. This means local Canadian ingredients, or non-US items from Europe or Mexico if possible, must now be used to make nachos, wings, and beer.
Leah Russell, the manager of a Madison Avenue tavern in Toronto, was aware of the boycott. She said it was “pretty set in stone,” even though the tariffs weren’t.
Ms. Russell told the BBC on Thursday, “I’m happy that we’re supporting local businesses and getting rid of American products.” I believe it’s a crucial action.
Even as the northern nation prepares for economic repercussions that it might ultimately do nothing to prevent in the event of a full-fledged trade war, this defiant response to President Donald Trump’s tariffs and threats against Canada has been playing out nationwide.
Actor Jeff Douglas, who was previously the face of Molson Canadian Beer’s “I Am Canadian” ads, responded to Trump’s “51st state” speech this week with a humorous yet fervently patriotic video that he uploaded to YouTube.
