Although plans are already “well developed,” defense ministers attending Thursday’s “Coalition of the Willing” meeting at NATO said much more work has to be done to define the extent of any post-peace accord mission and how many troops may be required.
The summit, which was called by France and the UK for operational negotiations to establish a reassurance force for Ukraine that would serve as a deterrence against possible Russian attack, was attended by ministers from 30 nations. We have a serious and realistic plan. In his opening remarks, UK Defence Secretary John Healey stated, “We have well-thought-out strategies and clear goals for Ukraine.
“We cannot jeopardize the peace by forgetting the war and the daily reality for millions of Ukrainians continues,” he continued, adding that the meeting’s goal was to “focus on how operational planning of the coalition could work, and how we make sure that we’re fully prepared for the moment a peace agreement is reached.
Following discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Defense Minister Rustem Umerov, and military chiefs to discuss planning, a group of French and British military officials traveled to Kyiv.
