Spread your enthusiasm and the witness of your faith” when you return to your more than 150 home countries, Pope Leo XIV exhorted the more than a million young Catholics who gathered in Rome on Sunday for the Youth Jubilee.
He spoke to hundreds of thousands of pilgrims gathered in Tor Vergata in the southern suburbs of Rome for the Jubilee’s closing Mass. Originally started by the late Pope Francis, it was one of the most significant occasions of the holy year. Pope Leo is meeting with the next generation of Catholics for the first time.
As we heard in the Gospel, the fullness of our existence is not dependent on our possessions or what we accumulate, he remarked. It has more to do with what we are able to accept and share joyfully.
Consuming, hoarding, and purchasing are insufficient. We must lift our gaze and look up at the “things above” to realise that everything makes sense in the world, but only insofar as it brings us closer to God and to our charitable brothers and sisters, fostering in us feelings of kindness, compassion, humility, meekness, forgiveness, and peace.
